Real Data on Radio’s Place in America’s 100 Top-Selling New Vehicles

Features a Dashboard Scoreboard, Six Key Findings, and Recommendations from Fred Jacobs, Paul Jacobs, Joe D’Angelo, and Mike McVay

Washington D.C. — 4/9/24Quu Inc., the trusted industry leader providing easy deployment of visual content for radio, announces the release of the 2024 In-Vehicle Visuals Report. In its inaugural year, this annual report offers a snapshot of radio’s place in the top 100 best-selling new vehicles in the U.S. This first-of-its-kind study uncovers radio’s strengths and areas for growth in vehicles, the #1 location for listening.

  • A database with vehicle data
  • Scoreboard of dashboard features
  • Six key findings with interpretation
  • Insights and action steps from experts

Fred Jacobs (President, Jacobs Media), Paul Jacobs (VP/GM, Jacobs Media), Joe D’Angelo (SVP, Global Broadcast Radio Xperi Inc.), and Mike McVay (President, McVay Media Consulting) contributed analysis and commentary in the report. All four will join Quu CEO Steve Newberry to discuss the findings in a free webinar on April 10 at 3p ET. Register here.

All the data on 100 vehicles surveyed is available now at QuuReport.com. Search and sort the findings, see a photo of each dash, and click any row for details.

The scoreboard reveals how common each feature is in the dashboard of the 100 vehicles surveyed. Quu will update the data annually to track radio’s standing and progress.

  • AM/FM radio is ubiquitous in new vehicles.
  • AM/FM radio no longer has a dashboard monopoly.
  • A growing number of vehicles offer built-in streaming apps.
  • Two out of three new vehicles have HD Radio installed.
  • GM vehicles are an exception to the widespread adoption of HD Radio.
  • All new vehicles have in-dash text. Most can display logos and other images.

Data for Quu’s 2024 In-Vehicle Visuals Report was collected by an independent contractor tasked with auditing in-dash systems. Quu engaged broadcast radio researcher Doug Hyde to analyze the data. Doug identified the report’s six key findings and provided insights into their impact on the radio industry.

“The data tells a story of radio’s ubiquitous presence in the car, but also details the inclusion of other audio sources,” said Doug Hyde. “Each automaker takes a different approach to their entertainment system and radio now has the data to see trends and develop strategies.”

“This report serves as a crucial yardstick for broadcast radio, helping us understand if we’re making headway in vehicles or not. As radio’s status evolves in future years, we will track it,” said Steve Newberry, CEO of Quu. “We are grateful to have well-respected experts like Doug, Fred, Paul, Joe, and Mike review the data and offer their perspectives on radio’s in-dash stumbling blocks and areas for growth.”

To gauge radio’s in-dash standing, each dashboard was carefully analyzed for audio entertainment features and visual components, including radio text, artist, and song information. Photos were taken, and a detailed, standardized questionnaire was completed. Data was collected from new vehicles onsite at various auto dealerships between November 2023 and January 2024.

Anyone in radio broadcasting: ownership, management, programming, on-air staff, engineering, sales, digital, and marketing is encouraged to attend the webinar on 4/10 at 3p ET. You will learn:

  • The actual state of in-car entertainment and visuals
  • How radio fits into the modern vehicle dashboard
  • Actionable advice to stay dominant in-dash
